Breast health matters at all ages
From the age of 20, it is important to know the look and feel of your breasts and recognise the signs which should prompt a consultation with your GP. Knowing your breasts and what is normal for you is the best way to detect new changes early. Regular self-examinations are essential for all women, but from the age of 40 this should be combined with a yearly screening mammogram, which patients can self-refer for as long as they have no symptoms.
A mammogram involves gentle compression of the breasts prior to taking a low-dose x-ray. Beyond Radiology is equipped with the latest 3D mammogram machine using Smartcurve® paddles designed to increase patient comfort without compromising on image quality or accuracy. Breast compression lasts only a few seconds for each view and a typical mammogram appointment takes only 20-30 minutes to complete.
“We know a mammogram can be daunting for many women, whether because they have had a bad experience, are anxious about the results, or have previously received confusing or contradictory advice”, says Dr Carole Paulus, Radiologist and Breast Imaging Clinical Lead at Beyond Radiology Silverdale.
“The idea behind our Breast Imaging Service in Silverdale is to bring the best specialist expertise and technology to our patients in a first-class environment with caring and compassionate staff.
Our aim is to empower women and allow them to be proactive with their breast health, and to ensure that their experience is as straightforward as possible. We aim to support women to have regular mammograms and in doing so help reduce mortality from breast cancer in our community”, adds Dr Paulus.
Early detection saves lives
It is well established that early detection is a crucial factor in combating breast cancer, potentially reducing the chance of adverse outcomes by about one third. This is because identifying small, early-stage cancers makes treatment significantly more manageable.
The risk of breast cancer increases with age and all women should consider starting screening at 40 with a yearly mammogram until at least age 75, if otherwise in good general health. This proactive approach can greatly improve the chances of detecting any abnormalities early when treatment options are most effective.
Beyond Radiology Silverdale encourages women aged 40 and above to schedule an annual mammogram. With quick booking times, patients can typically secure an appointment within two weeks.
